This easy apple pie recipe (and I mean easy) can be as natural as you want it. It’s almost a no-brainer. You may have noticed that I like to use the word “easy” on this web site! I’ve used this recipe for years, preferring to bake with pure maple syrup. Or use natural stevia sweetener or an artificial sweetener rather than sugar. But you can certainly use that if you’d like.
So if you want a full-fledged, all-natural apple pie recipe, give this one a try. Whenever I serve it I get rave reviews. Although I have to admit I no longer make a crust from scratch – that’s partly what makes this so easy. But I do get a frozen all-natural crust at the health food store.
So although this recipe assumes a frozen pie crust, feel free to make your own from scratch. (And if you'd like some more natural and easy apple recipes, just follow the link).
6 large tart apples, peeled, cored and sliced
2 frozen pie crusts (I use all-natural)
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
½ cup pure maple syrup (more if you want it sweeter)
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg, to taste
Several dabs of butter
Take the pie crust from the freezer to defrost it.
In a large mixing bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice first, then the syrup.
Sprinkle on the cinnamon and nutmeg, and then mix again.
Before filling the pie, I put the pie pan on a cookie sheet as a drip pan.
Place the apple mixture into the bottom pie crust.
Dab the top with butter.
Then place the top crust in place, trim the edges, and pinch edges together as usual.
Poke the center of the crust with a fork to make vent holes.
Bake at 350F degrees for 50 to 60 minutes until crust is brown.
