Pita Pizza

by Marsha
(MN)

A surprise pita pizza recipe, this one is made with BBQ sauce instead of regular pizza or tomato sauce! You can do all kinds of things with it, and it is very easy to make. Plus, you can make it as healthy as you want by using lots of fresh in season ingredients.

This is great for seniors and elderly too. Besides being high in nutrition (if you make it well), these are easy to make. You can put lots of different kinds of veggies and other food items on these, for a good nutritional range. I like to use whole grain pitas -- they are much healthier for you, as is any bread type item made with whole grains.

This is what you will need:

Several pieces of pita bread
1 to 2 Tablespoons of BBQ sauce (or tomato sauce)
2 slices of turkey bacon, broiled and then crumbled .... or
Pieces of turkey or chicken (good for left overs)
2 thinly sliced rings of red onion
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese, or Monterey Jack
1 to 2 Tablespoons of diced mushrooms, fresh is tastes much better
Any other veggies (such as green or red pepper)

Preheat the oven to 400F degrees. Assembled your ingredients onto the pita. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and starts to brown. Cut the pitas in wedges and serve warm.

Try these pita pizzas at parties and get togethers. My family members like to have them when playing cards, playing board games, or watching sports on TV together. Perfect to serve with any kind of beverage, but especially beer and wine! They are a great alternative to regular pizza. And I'm sure much less expensive!

These turned out great!

I hadn't thought of trying this before, and made them for family and friends during the football season. They were really popular and just about flew off the plate! I used the BBQ sauce instead of regular tomato sauce, some had beef and some had chicken. Both were really good. I'd recommend this one!
