Large Silk Butterflies

I try to come up with one of a kind projects to teach the seniors in my Elder Adult Program with Lutheran Social Services, Big Bear Lake CA.

I purchased the silk butterflies from Oriental Trading Company.(1-800-228-2269 or www.orientaltrading.com)
I used Dye Na Flow silk dyes by Jaquard. Hold the butterfly by its antennae, and using a small flat artists paint brush, add a color to the inner areas of the wings painting both front and back of each wings.

Then paint another color on the outer part of the wings painting both front and back and let the two colors meet, they will blend together nicely. Paint the body of the buttefly in a darker color. (I have also used Shiva Oil Irridescent Paintsticks with a stiff brush too, came out very nice. I have been told you can use marker pens to color them too)

After drying, decorate the wings with the little colored pearl halves (adhesive back) which I also ordered from Oriental Trading Company. I usually end a craft with fine glitter spray that I get from Michaels, JoAnns, or major craft store. It makes them beautiful.

Editor's Note - Thank you, Pam. These are truly beautiful!
