Crab Dip

by Amelia
(Maine)

I have a really good crab dip to share for a healthy snack. And it's easy to make too. We use it to snack on, plus for parties and get-togethers. The crab in it makes it more nutritious than regular dips. To make it healthier, serve it with some whole grain chips or low salt chips. You can get all kinds of whole grain chips now, not just standard corn chips. I use some great ones called Garden of Eatins Multi Grain Tortilla Chips (The kind with Everything in them is the best!) You can also serve this dip with ?toasted? crispy bread, whole grain crackers, or melba toast.

6-oz. can of crab meat
8-oz containers of cream cheese
1 teaspoon of curry powder
1 Tablespoon of dry onion soup
1 Tablespoon of milk
Dash of pepper to taste
Dash of garlic powder to taste (optional)

Mix everything well and put it in a greased casserole or a glass baking pan. Bake it at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

I hope you enjoy it!

Taco Chip Dip

by Rob
(Hamilton, Ontario, Canada)

Here is a really tasty and creamy taco chip dip that can give you the option of using healthy, low-fat (and also low-salt) ingredients. Most grocery stores carry these types of alternate products. You can also choose how hot you want it, so it won't upset stomachs -- works well for elderly snackers.

Ingredients:

500ml salsa (mild, medium or hot)
500ml light (low fat) cream cheese
500ml light (low fat) sour cream
500ml low fat cheddar cheese
Tortilla Chips

Layer the ingredients as follows:

Allow cream cheese to reach room temperature for easier mixing.
Mix cream cheese and sour cream and layer in 8x11 serving dish.
You may wish to strain the salsa slightly as it may contain too much liquid.
Pour salsa over first layer.
Grate cheddar cheese and layer on top.

Serve with whole grain, baked not fried, tortilla chips.

Blue Cheese Dip

by Amy
(Indiana)

This blue cheese dip is a delicious and nutritious – if you like blue cheese – that can be used for all kinds of different snacks. You can use it do dip veggies, or spread it on celery. You can also spread it on crackers. Using whole grain crackers is the healthiest. I like to use low salt Triscuits. I’ve also used this for dipping apple wedges. Somebody I know said it’s also good with grapes!

1/3 cup blue cheese
1/4 cup sour cream, or cream cheese
1 Tablespoon mayo
1/4 teaspoon Worchester sauce
1/4 onion, finely chopped; or else about 1 Tblspn of dry onion soup
About 1 tsp lemon juice

Mix the blue cheese and sour cream or cream cheese, until smooth. Then add in the rest of the ingredients and mix well. This can be served right away, or after chilling. Make sure any leftovers are refrigerated.

Shrimp Dip Recipe

by Tonya
(Alabama)

This is an excellent shrimp dip recipe with lots of healthy ingredients and seasonings. Great for dipping just about anything, whatever is your favorite snack.

This would be a nice, healthy recipe for elderly, because it has protein (cottage cheese, dairy, shrimp), plus optional seeds, is low in fat, tasty, and easy to eat.

Ingredients
1 pint cottage cheese
2 Tablespoons poppy seeds (optional)
1/2 teaspoon dried minced onion
1 Tablespoon sesame seed
Dash of celery salt
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 cup sour cream (you can use low fat)
1 (or 2) can of shrimp, drained
Dash of: garlic, paprika, dill

Mix all of the ingredients together well. You can adjust the amount of the "dashes" according to your taste. Then chill for about 2 hours before serving. This is very good as a veggie dip, or I also use whole grain chips. And of course if you're crazy about shrimp, try dipping shrimp into this shrimp dip!
