Octopus String Cheese Salad

This cute cheese salad is one of the characters of our party salads series. As always, we use plenty of fresh fruit, greens, and vegetables, so they are healthy for all ages, and especially excellent for elderly nutrition needs.

The abundance of greens resembles under water foliage, and the fruit reminds me of rocks and pebbles. You can also add in chunks of cubed cheese. We didn’t picture them here, but if you love cheeses, this is a perfect salad to put them in. Another option is to place an individually wrapped, round mini-cheese on the plate. Here’s how you make it.

Octopus String Cheese Salad

You will need:

  • Bag of Mixed Spring Greens or other greens for the “vegetation”
  • 6 grapes
  • A handful of blueberries (frozen is OK)
  • ˝ pear, for the “rock”
  • Stick of string cheese
  • 1/4 cup cubed cheese chunks – (Optional, and not shown in photo)
  • 3 candies for the face
  • Tube of squirt frosting to serve as “glue” for the candies
  • A couple toothpicks
  • Optional: fruit dressing to put around the pear (not pictured – we wanted to keep the illustration simple)
Arrange your greens for your octopus cheese salad on the salad plate. At this point you can spritz them with vinegar dressing, if you’d like. Stand up the pear, then spoon fruit dressing around it on top of the greens, if you are using it. Next, lay the grapes and blueberries around on the greens, plus the cubed cheese chunks, if you are using them.

Carefully make several long slits up the piece of string cheese with a knife, and gently pull them upwards, forming the legs. Put a toothpick into the bottom of the octopus, and then stick it into the top of the pear. I also put a toothpick into a spinach leaf and stood it upright into the pear, by the octopus. Your Octopus String Cheese Salad is done!
